Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving

Today is Thanksgiving in the US, and it is a normal day for us here in London. The boys were off to school, C is home with me on Thursdays anyway, Nick went to work. We've searched high and low for a reasonably priced turkey, but couldn't find one that wasn't pre-order for Christmas (sorry, not paying ₤70 for a turkey breast). I punted on a Thanksgiving meal today, maybe we'll do it on Saturday. Plus, I scheduled R a playdate for a friend for today last week without thinking about the fact that is was a holiday for us which is actually great because R can introduce his friend to pumpkin pie at our house tonight.

It is a bit strange to have this day be a normal day after so many years of the kids being off school for the whole week leading up to it, and Nick usually had two days off. There were a few sweet friends on the playground this morning at school drop off who wished us a happy Thanksgiving though.

C and I whipped up a pumpkin pie. Surprisingly the pumpkin wasn't that hard to find. I got some through my normal grocery delivery with Ocado and then the local butcher has an "American" section with pumpkin, Goldfish, boxed cake mix, Pam spray - you know, all the stuff us Americans want while we're gone. I kid, I do not want most of the things in that section. (We did grab some pickles. British pickles are not dill pickles even if they are labeled that, they will always be sweet.)

R requested pigs in a blanket. Crescent rolls are not a thing here, along with any sort of dough in a tube (I should check on this next time I am in the store). Had to sub puff pastry which actually worked out great. I only found one option for mini sausages, but that turned out okay too. As I'm sitting here writing this, there is only one little piggy staring back at me from the plate so they must've been edible.

Oh, and we also spent our Thanksgiving navigating an NHS doctor's appointment for the first time because C has some sort of virus that will not give up. It was really pleasant actually, but that's another post for another day.

We'll call our families tonight while they are eating their lunch, and the plan is to make homemade pizzas. Maybe that will be our new tradition. Then I'll probably make a chicken on Saturday and try to pass it off as a turkey.

Happy Thanksgiving all! I hope you get to eat yummy food, but more importantly I hope you get to take a minute to look around and find gratitude for all that you have. I know I will. ♥
